Seattle is known for many things; Starbucks, Microsoft, great music, glam grunge, and yes, the rain. However there are also other things lurking famously in the Pacific Northwest’s historical shadow. For downtown starters, there’s tales of a haunted underground beneath Pioneer Square and wandering souls in Pike Place Market.
However, the most well-known story to come from our region is probably that of “Big Foot”, claimed to roam in our deep, dark forests. Truth? Fiction? Interested? Read on if you’re ready to explore some local Seattle legends of folklore...

Pike Place Market is said to be home to ghosts, some with reputations that far precede present day. One of the most prevalent souls mentioned in sightings around the market is Princess Angeline, former resident and daughter of Chief Seattle. For more information about Seattle’s ghostly tales and tours, visit the following link:http://www.legendsofamerica.com/wa-pikemarket.html, or the well-known Underground Tour website is found athttp://www.undergroundtour.com/about/index.html.

Then there’s the Northwest tales that come from mysteries surrounding “Big Foot”, also called Sasquatch or Yeti. Stories of this elusive creature carry down from Canada, all along the West Coast. The most common description of Big Foot is large, powerful looking and ape-like, standing upwards of six feet tall. In most alleged sightings the creature was seen in dense forests or remote environments, appearing to be reclusive and non-confrontational. However the following link from the History Channel’s MonsterQuest, gives a wondering camera crew something to think about; and includes other related links to the Big Foot mystery available for your exploration.
Is folklore fact, fiction or a combination of both? Whatever the case, it continues to inspire stories to be told year after year around campfires of summer.
