Bigfoot or sasquatch is one of the most talked-about urban legends in North America. The equivalent of a yeti--which is (supposedly) a Himalayan creature--bigfoot has never been clearly documented. However, many people have claimed to have seen across the United States and even parts of Canada.
Most experts believe this creature is mostly made up and is nothing but a figment of someone's active imagination. Having said that, famous primatologist (ape expert) Jane Goodall has given credence to the existence of this creature.
According to various reports, this mysterious beast stands about 6 to 10 feet tall and weighs over 225 kgs. While it is bipedal like humans, bigfoot has a pronounced ape-like brow ridge and a low-set forehead. It also has dark brown or reddish hair covering its body.
However, the most distinct feature of this sasquatch is its enormous feet--which is where it gets the name 'bigfoot.' Footprints allegedly left behind by this creature are about 24 inches in length and 8 inches in width. These huge feet (based on various accounts) have anywhere between two and six toes. In fact, some people have also uncovered claw marks along with footprints!
Much like humans, these giant creatures are said to be omnivores. Given the mystique surrounding it, bigfoot is also considered to be a nocturnal creature--this, obviously, adds more drama to the equation!
In the United States alone, there have been hundreds of bigfoot sightings since the very beginning of the 20th century. However, most baffling are the claims of a few alleged victims of sasquatch. People have been supposedly abducted and held captive by this creature.
A Canadian prospector by the name of Albert Ostman is one of the most famous bigfoot victims. Till his death in 1975, Ostman claimed that he was held captive by a bigfoot for six days in 1924 in British Columbia, Canada.
Apart from this several people have presented photographic evidence of this creature. However, these claims have been shot down as almost every time pictures have been found to be doctored.
Meanwhile, the handful of scientists who actually buy into the bigfoot phenomenon believe that the creature could be part of the relict population of gigantopithecus--a genus of apes that existed over a million years ago.
All in all, there's not enough evidence to either prove or disprove the existence of sasquatch. So, like most unsolved mysteries, the enigma of bigfoot is unjustly glorified by believers and arrogantly dismissed by skeptics. Ultimately, it's for you to decide whether you buy into this hoax or not!
